Nilson - House 7
Nilson has a normal build for his age. He was sent to us from a distant city known as Giruá. It took some time for the authorities there to send him, as they were fitting him with glasses.
Nilson is very affectionate. He took to us immediately. He is always inviting us to stop and talk to him, or calling us to his house when we happen to walk by on the road cutting through the COL campus. We gave him a toy cell phone during his first days with us. He is very appreciative of all we are doing for him. We know very little about his past. We know nothing of his parents, if they are alive, or why he is in the situation that he is in. While he was in the half way house in Giruá, he had no one visit him there.
He has some learning deficiencies and so is not in the normal school system. He has just gone through a myriad of tests to see how the special school can best treat his learning disorder. We were told that he can be stubborn at times, but we have seen very little of this. He is responding very well to the family situation and has made good friendships with the others in his home. Nilson’s house parents are Sérgio and Romilda.
Nilson is 14 years old and in grade 3. He is slow in some areas. He is a quiet boy but is always smiling. He likes to joke around and is curious. He is immature for his age and usually plays with his younger brothers and sisters. He is know here as “Mr. Bean” because he is tall and skinny. Please pray that the Lord will help Nilson with his school work and his spiritual growth.
Update: Nilson is growing like a weed. His nickname is Mr. Bean and he loves it. He also enjoys sitting on a skate baord going downhill.
January 2007 Update: Nilson is 14 and in 5th grade. Nilson has not expressed his desire to accept Christ as Saviour, but he enjoys church and participates in pre-adolescent program, Boys’ Brigade and Sunday School. At COL he takes the leather course and enjoys making belts. At the culture Center in Campo Bom he took a drawing course in which he demonstrated great interest. He loves to play outside with the ball!! He has very good behaviour and is responsible in his chores, taking care of the dogs and helping his house mom with the COL garden. He is very organized and tidy.
Main Prayer Request: That he would make a commitment to Christ and be able to learn more quickly in school.
2008 Update: Nilson is sixteen years old and in grade five. At home he dries the dinner dishes and helps to bake bread. His goal is to complete his studies and take courses so that he can work in the area of computers. In his spare time he enjoys playing soccer, working on the computer and watching television. He is calm, quiet, loving and lovable and likes to play. He is active in Sunday School and the adolescents’ group at church and is growing well spiritually. He is both saved and baptized.
Please pray that Nilson will succeed in mathematics at school. In the Brazilian school system a student who fails one subject must repeat the whole year.
2009 Update: Nilson took a job training course and now works at a supermarket. Please pray that he would do well in his apprenticeship and pass his Math course at school.
